PRESENTATION

The “Instituto de Biomedicina de Valencia” (IBV, Biomedicine Institute of Valencia) is a research centre belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones  Científicas (CSIC, Spanish Research Council), located in the former venue of the Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (IATA, Institute for Agricultural Chemistry and Food Technology), now a historical building for having hosted the first CSIC Institute at the Valencian Community.

The IBV represents the CSIC investment for the Biomedical Research in the Valencian Community and aims for the development of activities that contribute to connect the basic biological knowledge with the medical advances in the health area.

At the IBV different biomedical research areas are combined with the goal of offering a multidisciplinary environment in which the pathologies are studied from multiple complementary angles. Areas of particular interest are the research in metabolic and dermatologic pathologies, the development and specification of the nervous system, comparative genomics and genetics applied to human pathologies, the structural biology and bioinformatic studies on the cell signalling as well as the identification and characterization of new therapeutic targets for the rational development of novel antibiotics and anti-venoms. The IBV is also an important node in the research of the rare disease pathophysiology.

The activity of the IBV research groups is carried on the context of competitively funded research projects in the framework of the Spanish National Plan for R+D, and its equivalents from the Valencian Community, the European Union framework programmes, the European Research Council (ERC), and grants from Charities and non-profit Associations.

The IBV opened its doors in 1998, then with 4 research groups. Nowadays (2015) it counts with 11 research groups organized in two Departments, and a Joint Research Unit together with the Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe (CIPF). In addition different IBV groups participate in CIBERER, CIBERNED, the RECAVA network and the VLC Campus.
