WE ARE STUDYING THE MOLECULAR BASIS FOR CELLULAR HETEROGENEITY.

 

This is a widespread phenomenon affecting every organism in all biological populations, making every individual unique. This phenomenon has important physio-pathological implications.

 

Cellular fractional killing is a good example where cellular heterogeneity plays an important role. Chemotherapy surviving cells, often generate more aggressive tumors that the former one and is the principal cause of tumor relapse. 

 

Cell differentiation is another example for the importance of cell variability. Stem cell fate is governed by stochastic segregation of molecular and/or cellular components.

 

We have identified an important source of cellular variability, which is the asymmetric and stochastic segregation of mitochondria at mitosis. This uneven partition of mitochondria creates metabolic dissimilar cells, which results in noise in gene expression and heterogeneous phenotypes.
